Post-Tensioning Institute Announces Seminar Schedule

Post-Tensioning Institute

PHOENIX, AZ - The Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) - a non-profit organization for the advancement of post-tensioned concrete design and construction - has announced the dates for their popular Analysis and Design of Post-Tensioned Building Structures as well as their Fundamentals of Post-Tensioning: Design, Analysis and Construction seminars.

The Analysis and Design of Post-Tensioned Building Structures seminar, developed for engineers and designers actively involved in post-tensioning design, will be held Sept. 16 in Minneapolis, Min. and Sept. 18 in Toronto, Canada. This full-day in-depth workshop will include hands-on training on the analysis and design of new post-tensioned building structures and will cover the following aspects in the design of post-tensioned structures:

  • Preliminary Design: Factors that affect the selection of structural systems will be discussed. The presentation will focus on key aspects and steps involved in the analysis and design of post-tensioned structures. Important code provisions relating to the design of post-tensioned structures will be highlighted.
  • Detailed Analysis and Design: Effective techniques for modeling of one- and two- way slabs will be presented. Detailed examples of common types of structural systems will be discussed using hand calculations as well as commonly used software. Hands-on exercises of practical situations will be used to explain the basic concepts.
  • Detailing and Structural Drawings: Causes of restraint and ways of mitigating problems arising from restraint will be discussed. The workshop will also cover common mistakes that are seen on structural drawings and solutions to common design/construction situations.

PTI is an AIA Registered Continuing Education System (CES) provider. A total of 8 AIA Learning Units (LUs)/0.8 CEU credits will be awarded to each participant who successfully completes the seminar. The cost to attend is $225 for PTI members and $275 for non-members.

The Fundamentals of Post-Tensioning: Design, Analysis, and Construction session will be offered Sept. 15 in Detroit, Mich. and Oct. 16 in New Orleans, La. The presentations will focus on analysis, design and construction fundamentals, with an emphasis on post-tensioned buildings. The seminar is intended to provide a basic understanding of post-tensioning and is of benefit to anyone who would like to develop a fundamental understanding of post-tensioning design and construction concepts, including structural engineers, contractors, installers, inspectors, architects, project managers, code specifiers, as well as municipal and building officials. Key concepts, code requirements, examples and practical design and construction tips will be discussed. Highlights of the course include:

  • Post-Tensioning Technology: Materials, fabrication, installation procedures, common systems and applicable specifications will be described.
  • Analysis & Design: Key concepts such as load balancing, secondary moments and prestress losses will be explained. Applicable code requirements will be identified and their impact on design discussed.
  • Applications: Project examples will be presented to illustrate various uses of post-tensioning in buildings as well as how tendons are laid out in common floor systems. The use of external post-tensioning in the retrofit of an existing slab will also be discussed. Facts and myths about post-tensioned as compared to reinforced concrete slabs will also be covered.
  • Construction: Installation techniques will be explained. Issues related to drawing review, inspection, and interaction with other trades such as electricians and plumbers will be discussed. Other topics include how various structural elements interact with one another in the field as well as construction/coordination issues that may typically arise.

A total of 4 LU/0.4 CEU credits will be awarded to each participant who successfully completes the seminar. The cost to attend is $130 for PTI members and $160 for non-members.

Established in 1976, PTI focuses on research projects directed toward development of specifications and design recommendations, publication of technical literature on applications of post-tensioning, and an annual program of technical seminars to disseminate information on post-tensioning design and construction technology. PTI provides research, technical development, marketing and promotional activities for companies engaged in post-tensioned construction. Its publications are a major communication system for disseminating information on post-tensioning design and construction technology.
